Work, Wins and Wine!

Starting my business hasn’t made me fearless, but I wish I'd trusted myself and done it sooner, because although challenging at times, the past four months have been great. Yes, there’s admin. Yes, HMRC requires witchcraft and a great accountant. But the work is more varied and interesting, the wins feel bigger and building something in my own name is rewarding. Plus the boss is awesome and lets me go for soul nourishing lunches with glorious former colleagues occasionally.

Some of the best bits so far:

  1. The privilege of supporting organisations working in business development, sustainability, manufacturing, retail, technology and the arts.

  2. Helping clients navigate challenging communications with clarity and confidence to best achieve their objective, bringing together different businesses and platforms to achieve a cohesive voice and securing national press coverage.

  3. Developing a comms strategy that reinvigorated an organisational approach to marketing and opened their eyes to tangible PR opportunities.

  4. Writing a TL piece that actually gave client focus and business direction for the year to come.

  5. Creating stories that reached the people who needed to hear them - including helping to hold an organisation publicly accountable.

  6. Meeting brilliant and creative business owners, working with a really lovely celebrity brand ambassador and growing my journalist network.

  7. Being introduced to LEAN business methodology and joining a client’s team meeting and stretch (yep actual stretches).

  8. Enjoying a Christmas get-together with some lovely clients (that was the wine).

  9. Working with another marketing agency on a joint tender and learning about how that process works.

  10. Giving myself time out to have lunch with colleagues from my 1st SLT in 2009, which was joyful and allowed me to reflect with pride on the last 17 years.

  11. Putting myself out there and getting the opportunity to do some keynote speaking and industry panels, and being asked to host a CIPR podcast.

It’s been a brilliant adventure so far. There have been down days - talking to the accountant about HMRC compliance whilst ill and trying to deal with a poorly child who had removed their own soiled nappy was...a low point, I won’t lie. But I’m good in a crisis. The situation was contained. Pitching to prospective clients is always a bit nerve wracking and talking turkey about money is somewhat uncomfortable, but I am doing it and I know my worth.

All in all it’s been a blast. So here’s to more work, wins and ideally, more wine!
